Bedford Blues 28 Ampthill 31, Boxing Day Battle Of Bedfordshire

4554 spectators watched Ampthill outscore Blues 4 tries to 5, quite incredible when you consider that 12 years ago Ampthill were relegated to level 7

I'm not sure the result was that important, knowing the mix of players in the squads. What is far more important is that 4,554 East Midlanders got out of their beds to meet old friends and watch a game of rugby.

I'm sure some of the atmosphere will rub off on both teams and a few may become regular attendees at Dillingham Park or Goldington Road.

The Cambridge v Old Perseans was always a fun match, perhaps Cambridge and Shelford should play next year as well - when we were last in the same league (N2S) both matches generated crowds of about 2,000

Having attended matches at both grounds - I find that hard to believe!
