This has absolutely nothing to do with rugby but it was such an uplifting and inspirational moment that I wanted to share it with the rugby community.

It was a visit to the supermarket to pick up a paper and a parking disc which is obligatory in Northumberland where myself and Mrs Bolognese were on holiday. I was directed to the information desk where a mature lady was engaged with a customer and another customer was queuing. There was also another young lady standing quietly at the end of the counter, she had downs syndrome and as the person queuing in front of me showed no inclination to engage with her I stepped forward.

I asked the young lady for a parking disc and also whether I could pay for the paper at the Information Desk. She looked a little flustered and for a moment I was concerned that she couldn't cope, but she took a deep breath, said yes, passed me a parking disc and entered the price of the newspaper into the till.

As the sale was correctly rung up she gave a small exclamation of 'Yes' and gave herself a fist pump. When I presented a £10 note she again momentarily caught her breath but methodically selected the correct change. After pausing to re-check her arithmetic by carefully counting each coin out loud she handed me my change with a smile so wide and proud it melted my heart.

After I thanked her she turned away from me and silently gave a succession of double handed fist pumps. I filled up. Here was a young lady for whom simple tasks must be a struggle but she bravely put herself forward for a customer facing role and was such a credit to herself, her employers and her community.

That singular moment made up for all the rain and cold that Northumberland threw at us last week.

BE - if more people spared a few minutes to allow those less fortunate than us to perform tasks that are simple to us but extremely rewarding to them, the world would be a better place.

Good on you and good luck to Caldy for the coming season.

Big Eddie, as the father of a rugby loving, Downs son, can I just say well done. To try to get any special needs child to take the first steps to independence is a major but rewarding effort that has to be applauded.
My son attends all my clubs games, home and away , and enjoys this immensely. In fact, one of our happiest moments was when promotion was confirmed at Caldy, the season before last.   Didn’t get to meet you, but met Seagoon. A super day, 15 seasons in that day, weather wise, but happy just the same.
Sorry the drop came last season and hope we can enjoy your warm welcome again in the near future.

I look forward to meeting up again this season Tiger Dome. That young lady made a big impression on me for the sheer pride and enjoyment she so obviously felt for a very small but important achievement.

No one could have been prouder than her and it was so moving to see her acknowledge this in such a pure and innocent manner.

PI003,

I am sure you have experienced many such rewarding moments with your son and you put it so well regarding first steps towards independence. The young lady made a very positive and memorable impression on me and today I have written to her employers to tell them that.

Alderman, I would tell the world if I could because it was such an important moment which is unlikely to ever leave me. The world would be so much better if every now and again we were all as brave and steadfast as that young lady.
