So the draw for the world cup is tomorrow morning. Here are the confirmed bands so far:

Band 1:
New Zealand, England, Australia and Ireland

Band 2:
Scotland, France, South Africa, Wales

Band 3:
Argentina, Japan, Georgia, Italy

Band 4:
Americas 1 - (US or Canada), Europe 1 - (Romania), Oceania 1 and 2 (Samoa, Fiji or Tonga)

Band 5:
Africa 1 (Namibia) Americas 1 (US or Canada), Play-off winner between Europe and oceania - Probably Tonga Repechage winner - (2015 Uruguay but could be someone like Russia, Portugal?)

Bands 4 and 5 are just guesswork from me but I should be pretty close because I'd expect all 3 pacific island teams to qualify

Looking at the top three bands from England's point of view. the likelihood is that we'll get a tasty team from pot 2. I'd like to avoid Wales and South Africa if possible. I wouldn't be worried about playing France or Scotland because I think we'd beat those two teams. SA worry me because even though they're in a mess now surely the smart money is on them being in better shape come the world cup. As for pot 3 obviously we'd like to avoid Argentina who IMO are better than a band 3 side. The others in that pot don't worry me at all. Japan could be interesting if we get them remembering how they beat SA in the last world cup and how they'd get a lift from being on home soil.

So from those the best group for us would be IMO:
England, Scotland, Georgia, USA and Namibia.

the group of death scenario would be:
England, South Africa, Argentina, Samoa and Fiji/Tonga.

If we got that it would send shivers up my spine to be honest. At least there's no big 6 Nations team in tier 3 that we could get, a la Wales in 2015.

I'm not too sure the Springboks will improve by then because of all the politics that go on over there not allowing them to pick their best team. After all, they've been told that their team has to be 50% black for the World Cup, so they're limiting half their talent base to a tiny fraction of the small numbers that play rugby over there.

Actually that's a good point to be honest. They should get rid of all the politics and just pick their best side, regardless of colour.

England get France, Argentina, America 1 (USA) and Oceania 2 (Fiji).

I like the fact that Oceania can get up to 4 spots while Asia only get a repechage. Hong Kong must be a bit p-ed off with this protectionism designed to allow the Pacific Islands to get a free ride back into the RWC.

Indeed. Hong Kong do it where most of their players are white and they're the 2nd best team in Asia.

I think the Welsh might struggle to get out of their group. A bruising encounter with a PI team and then perhaps Canada will see them come unstuck against the Georgians and Aussies.

If any teams have a right to be annoyed, I'd have thought that it's all but one of Romania, Russia, Spain, Portugal and Germany who will miss out on the World Cup despite being ranked higher in the world than Hong Kong, whose claim is only vaguely credible because they're the second best team in a continent that barely plays the game because of the log jam of European teams.

Personally I think that offering free rides to weak teams at the expense of established, competitive teams would be a retrograde step for the tournament. One of the positives of the previous tournament for me was that there weren't any Japan vs New Zealand / Australia vs Namibia style slaughters. Also, I don't believe that all matches were sold out. Replacing one of Samoa, Tonga or Fiji with Hong Kong would make stadia harder to fill and one sided matches more likely.

If Hong Kong deserve a place, they will win it via the repechage.

America have  torn Canada apart, 52-16.
So the Eagles will be America 1 - I think that means Ben Te'o will come up against Mike Te'o

Hong Kong is one of the richest RFU's in the world. Might have something to do with it !

One qualifier resolved, 7 places left and 28 teams chasing them.

Tonga play Fiji on Saturday - with Fiji going on to Samoa the following week.
Fiji having won both their home matches top the group on 8 points.
Tonga and Samoa are both on 5 points, but Samoa have significantly better points difference.
If Fiji win either match they are Oceania 1.
If Tonga lose and fail to get a bonus point then  will be Ocenia 2 unless they ship 27 more points.

Also coming up on Wednesday are the Africa Silver Cup semi-finals.
Botswana play Cote d'Ivoire and Morocco  play Madagascar.
The winner of the 2017 Silver Cup qualifies for next year's Gold cup and a shot at qualification.
Africa have one place and a repechage place.

The other qualification match this summer is in August when Cook islands host Tahiti - the winner is Oceanian 4 and advances to a playoff against the Asian champion for a repechage place.

Cote d;Ivoire beat Botswana 58-25 and will play Morocco - who dispatched Madagascar 57-33 - in the final on the 8th.
Which means they still have a chance to qualify for the first time since 1995.

So the Ivory Coast may qualify despite being ranked 53 in the world, that makes Hong Kong's claim "justifiable". So sad that we are going the way of FIFA!!

Why don't they run a second level "World Cup" at the same time as RWC2019 for the developing countries, they could even be pre-match games before the main events!

They've still got some way to go to get through the Gold Championship.  By the time the 20 qualifiers are finalised I'd be very surprised if we see anybody ranked lower than about 22 in the world.

Fiji won 10-14 so they are Oceania 2 and play Australia, Wales  Georgia and either Canada or Uruguay
Tonga's losing bonus puts them second for now.
Samoa need a bonus point next week to join England's group.

Samoa failed to get a bonus point so Tonga join Englands group and Samoa go on to play Europe 2 for a place in Ireland's group.

Cote D'Ivoire lost to Morocco - so they need to wait another 4 years for a chance.
Morocco are promoted to the Africa Gold Cup.

Aside from relegation from this season's Africa Gold cup, the next action is the match between Cook Islands and Tahiti

Pool A: Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Europe 1, play-off winner (Europe 2 v Samoa)

Pool B: New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Africa 1, repechage winner

Pool C: England, France, Argentina, USA, Tonga

Pool D: Australia, Wales, Georgia, Fiji, Americas 2 (Canada/Uruguay)
