The RFU collaborated in setting up this league to be played in the second half of the season between the top six second XVs in the North East - to create genuine competition and to overcome the problems of (eg) Wharfedale caused by their opponents crying off.

This evening, Wharfedale Foresters were due to host Darlington Mowden Park under the lights, before an expected crowd of over 250. The visitors, however, with probably the biggest squad north of Watford, have cried off 'due to player unavailability' http://www.wharfedalerufc.co.uk/.

What a disservice to the game.

What a shame, all northern teams have been crying out for a decent 2nd team league. There really are no excuses for calling off such a game !!

Run with it

They would rather cry off than put out a weak squad. No doubt their  3rd team will play tomorrow.  I was privileged to watch a scratch Wharfedale Foresters side travel to Mowden earlier this season on a Friday night,  after Mowden had already cancelled once due to player unavailability, only for Mowden to put out a side full of well known names. Dale lost, just, but the lads got a good, hard game, and surely that's what it's all about at 2nd team level.

Talking the talk as #mowdenfamily but poor relations in this instance.

Obviously I don't know the situations at Wharfedale and Mowden Park. But when a 1st team squad gets paid to play matches it is difficult to motivate
your 2nd team to travel 150 miles to play rugby for free.
Personally I loved playing rugby and I would have given up a days work to play under lights at one of the most hospitable clubs in Yorkshire.

I beleive the Wharfedale website clearly stated last night the game was cancelled due to an extremely wet pitch?

Someone has changed their mind then. It now clearly states that the pitch was declared playable but that DMP won't be turning up due to "player unavailability".

dgs  nothing on the wharfedale website last night suggested the match was off  it said there was to be a  12 midday pitch inspection to determine if the game could go ahead  due to heavy rain  its a real shame  that the darlington outfit  could not  muster  a second team  a great game has now been  missed

Very poor form from Darlington Mowden Park. These kind of games are meant to help strengthen the second teams by giving them good opposition which can only benefit both sides players. Surely they (DMP) knew in advance when the fixture was going to be played so it follows that so did the players who would be selected to play............. Or did they not fancy putting out a so called "weakened" side and getting thumped? Discuss.

Bit embarrassing, no idea what the situation is so can't help cool the frustration, but it must be significant to call the game off. We (DMP 3rds) are distant cousins to the 1st and 2nd squads, we don't train or play together, and not a huge amount of movement up or down, occasionally we'll lose a body or two or needed upwards if 2nds short (as they do do the 1sts), but would have to guess it's more than just a couple. Yes, our thirds fixture is still on, sorry, feel the pain, we've had our last two games pulled on us

Sorry DGS Old Boy, but you are totally wrong on this.

This was the initial post: -

" 28 January - Pitch Inspection Prior to Foresters v Darlington MP

Please note that due to heavy rainfall a pitch inspection will be carried out at the Avenue at about mid-day tomorrow (Friday) in order to decide if the Foresters’ match against Darlington Mowden Park can go ahead.

As soon as a decision has been made we will ensure that the result is posted on this site."

And this was the final one: -

"29 January - Foresters v Darlington Mowden Park - It's on but it's OFF

The pitch at the Avenue has been inspected and found to be perfectly playable. We therefore declared the game “on”. However Darlington Mowden Park have advised us that they will not be coming after all due to player unavailability.

We do not know at this stage whether this important league match will be rescheduled. There is a definite case for us to claim the league points"

Here in the NW we've been rather self-congratulatory about the NOWIRUL league set-up. But things aren't going smoothly for Fylde Hawks, our 2nd team, in recent weeks in the Premiership division. Sale FC 2nds have called off this morning and can't raise a team to travel to the Woodlands.

This is the 2nd time they've called off a 2nd team fixture at the Woodlands in 5 weeks. Our players need match action if they are to compete for 1st team places. Sale are a National League team so this is especially disappointing and surprising. Like Wharfedale, we get decent crowds for 2nd team fixtures so call offs (particularly late ones) like this are very frustrating. Grrrrr ...

An academic is someone who sees something working perfectly in practice & wonders if it will work in theory

AF

I wish the Hawks had the same problem and had cried off last weekend no such luck.

On a personal note I use to enjoy the Friday night games against the Forresters a good few seasons back. That was proper competition

All the best

I played in a few of those and agree, they were great games with good crowds. I used to love playing under lights on a Friday.

Perhaps it added a bit too much spice - Dale red after 3 minutes, match finished 12 on for Dale and 13 for Mowden.
The Arena is the coldest place I have ever watched rugby. The wind somehow swirls and bathes one in an icy breeze from all directions.

It was also a game that Wharfedale could have come away with 5 points rather than 1.  I thought Seals, Homan and Henry looked very sharp for DMP.

What can you possibly know about the circumstances of a team crying off.

DMP have 'not' been crying off in the Candy League for years.

DMP are not a totally pro team.

DMP are very interested in what goes on below.

Is that it !
