They have announced that they are re-jigging their line-up so there will be dedicated channels for soccer (2), golf and cricket.  Everything else (including, presumably, both codes of rugby) will apparently be on something called Arena.  Whether this means they will have any space to fill, and therefore be tempted to show Championship rugby, I know not, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
That's easy for you to say.

Sky have lost the rights for both European competitions from 2018 onwards. So obviously a RE think on rugby.

Also - I'm guessing the fact that there won't be any playoff games to show will make the Championship less tempting.

So sad that there is not a rugby channel as there is in NZ, there are so many games that could be shown that are recorded each week. Production costs would be negligible as GKC games and Nat 1 games have to be recorded anyway.

Someone who has worked with broadcasters writes....

We've been through this before - there's an audience of literally about 6 people that would watch a one-camera, fixed position, no commentary stream of a run of the mill Championship game.

Streaming such would simultaneously trash Sky's brand in terms of production values, value-add, etc, and the response of the casual punter to coming across such a broadcast while idly flipping through the channels can only be imagined....

If clubs want to do it themselves then no one's stopping them, but IIRC from the last time this was discussed on here, *people who had actually done it* at both Mose and I think Jersey said that it's nowhere near as straightforward as people make it sound and technologically difficult to do regularly without salaried people who know what they're doing.

So, there's the brand side - would Sky, BT, whoever want to do it? Is it in their interests?

There's the cost side - because it's *really* not as simple as saying "it's all being filmed anyway, let's just get it out there instead of sitting on it." Not as a watchable package to the standard the viewing public expects it isn't. So it's going to take manpower and money.

Then, and this is the real elephant in the room, there's the rugby side. We all love our clubs and spend our hard earned money going to watch them. But we're the minority (and we're already going to be there). Go back to the days of Rugby Special and they cherry picked the big matches to show. I'd argue there's little visual spectacle except for the already converted in watching two teams of unknowns playing in front of <2,000 people in an antiquated ground.

Especially if, as is usually the case, the cameras are on the same side as the one stand and so the backdrop for the viewing public is about 3 hardy souls standing in the rain....

I'd imagine the RFU would step in at this point because showing such matches in tier 2 or 3 is not going to be good for the wider perception of the game in terms of health or popularity. Harsh, but I think probably true.

billesleyexile I will bow to your knowledge, in the Antipodeans it seems to be more about showing the game as opposed to the broadcaster feeling they are giving an inferior product - but then again their premier packages are not quite the same as ours.

As you say maybe the RFU may make them available.

I'm thinking of ditching Sky atm, it's only the cricket that we watch, of which "Bumbles" commentary is worth the subscription alone. Hopefully BT can eventually gain the international games & it's job done. Just no real numbers for the championship to make it viable.

I can't help but feel that some sort of Championship highlights package (using a voice over rather than a commentator) should be feasible. The official GKIPA Champ twitter feed has a tries of the week video clip so logically only a small extension to what is already happening.

Small steps but without media coverage the league will always struggle.

Maybe, but who's going to watch it? The aggregate figures of the people interested enough to have actually gone to the weekend's 6 matches isn't impressive... I get that there has to be an element of "build it and they will come" but broadcasting increasingly doesn't have the patience to do that (they want instant success) and I still think that when it comes down to it the Champ and N1 aren't really fit to be seen in terms of crowds or infrastructure. More media coverage *might* grow interest, but I suspect it's equally likely that it *might* just hammer a few more nails in - so be careful what you wish for!

There are things that can be done though - Mose have their own YouTube channel and upload their highlights after pretty well every match, home and away.

In the 21st century *any* club not doing at least that is basically firing into their own feet on a weekly basis.* Instead of pushing for broadcasters to take seriously something that probably 10,000 people a weekend can be bothered to go and watch live, real progress could be made closer to home by lobbying your clubs to up their game on the things they *can* control...

*although given the blood-out-of-a-stone pathological secrecy of at least a couple of Champ/N1 clubs I could but won't name, I'm not holding my breath.

It's the obsession with the relegated Premiership club - SKY seems to think they're the only one worth bothering with.

I've met their fans(!) - and in all honesty they are lovely people. Absolutely no criticism whatsoever from me for the people who go and watch Hartpury. I will admit that my tongue was slightly in my cheek that there aren't more of them though!
