predictions for round 1
Wales v Scotland - Home Win, what a cracking game to start off with and a very important one!. if Wales lose this they're in massive bother with England and Ireland away in rounds 2 and 3. despite their awful injury list I actually think Wales will edge this one, Scotland despite their clear improvement still haven't mastered the art of winning away from home consistently. I expect a close game but quite an open one with a few tries.

France v Ireland - Home win, again against most people's predictions but I think France will just win this. I don't know what the fuss is about with Ireland, they were pretty mediocre in the autumn (they beat a poor South Africa side) yes Ireland are very solid but they don't score loads of tries. I think France may surprise a few this year and will come out and play expansive rugby. I think it may be a tight game but I back France at home to win, Ireland aren't as good as some would make you believe.

Italy v England - Away win, I think England will win this comfortably in the end but I can see it being a tricky game for a while. England have quite a few injury problems and their lack of back row cover is a worry. I don't know what to expect from Italy but they surely must be better than 12 months ago?. i'm sure everyone remembers "ruckgate" I wonder if Italy have a similarly quirky tactic lined up this time arund to surprise us with?. I thought England lacked fluency in the autumn and haven't played that well in the last 12 months, I can see a scrappy first 50-60 minutes here but then hopefully we pull away. not sure about the 4 try bonus point to be honest.

3 away wins for me, though I think they will all struggle, injuries and some poor form in the Autumn would make choosing a bit of a lottery.

You don’t win in Sydney narrowly if you are chokers YoYo. I am much more worried about Gatland being compelled to abandon Warrenball and open up!!! Still thinking about this one.

Scotland to beat Wales for me. Only question with Scotland is their front row. Wales are rebuilding and look unsure of their approach.

France will be a different team to last year and while Ireland are settled, strong and well-coached, they could be surprised by a revived French style.

England to beat Italy after sorting out whatever clever tricks O’Shea and Catt have devised. Closer margin than before but still no success for Italy.

I think the fact that Wales have selected the entire Scarlets backline means that they will play their natural game, knowing each other as they do.  The only disappointments are in the back row, where James Davies is missing and John Barclay's been picked on the wrong team!

Having watched the Scarlets demolish Bath a couple of weeks ago I'm really hoping that they can play like that again on Saturday and consign 'Warrenball' to the bin once and for all.

My fear exactly Mark. It wouldn’t be the first time, by any means, a Coach was forced to pick a winning side against all his natural instincts. Basically in the backs it’s Scarlets v Glasgow. If the weather is decent it ought to be an excellent game!!

I think Wales v Scotland could be up there as the game of the Championship, we've got two very attacking sides on paper. as long as the not wanting to lose the 1st game element doesn't restrict them I can see it being a cracker.

without wishing to seem overly pedantic can I draw your attention to Josh Adams (Worcester), named in the starting XV ?
I know, I know, it's practically a Scarlets backline....

I like our team for the Italy game but what does Ben Youngs have to do to get dropped? he's terrible.

I reckon it’ll be Scotland, Ireland and England!!

It will wake Wales and France up though, who’ll produce an upset or two!!
