Can somebody clarify a rule for me. When a team runs out o front row speacialists as Leinster did yesterday (1 off injured, 2 in the bin) and the game resorts to uncontested scrums, I thought that the offending team had to reduce their on field players by 1. Is this not the case or are there specific circumstances when this happens? Yes Leinster were 2 men down for 10 minutes yesterday, but it did mean that Jersey couldn't use their most effective weapon, the scrum.

That is also my understanding. Leinster should have been reduced to 12 players until a returning YC prop enabled contested scrums to resume. They should then have played with 14 players until the second YC period ended. Any scrum during that period must still comprise of eight per side, leaving Jersey a potential three man advantage in the backs.

In Nat one some time ago the ref sent our 2 props to the bin. At that time I pointed out to sir that as he haď caused the issue we did not lose a man as that was the law at the time. Don't know if that still applies

This was discussed in 2013, see http://rolling-maul.com/latest-scores_topic11051_post238469.html?KW=#238469
but basically the RFU did publish regulations requiring the team had to be reduced by another player but The Regulation was later revised as the IRB ruled that it is not permissible for the referee to require that an additional player be removed from the field of play when a front row player is temporarily or permanently suspended and uncontested scrums result.

I thought so as it was certainly unpopular with the opposition at the time which I fully get as it takes away the advantage. But the law was there

Thanks chaps, explains quite a bit. It took the officials quite a while to sort it out and I would guess that we had 2 halves of over 50 minutes each.
