Great to see that Hull Ionians Joe Makin has been selected to Captain the England Counties v CSM Bucharest in today's opening match. A real honour.
Hull Ionians Lewis Minikin is also on the bench as is Jamie Broadley of Sheff Tigers. A really good show from the Yorkshire lads.

The counties touring side is normally picked from those who play county rugby

Yep know that
As an example the Cornwall and Somerset sides have been heavily populated by Redruth and Taunton players.
And by the way Cornwall play in the top competition.
And while on the subject no Worthing players again. Several have featured for their respective counties this year.

The Redruth fans keep telling us their players cannot take a Friday afternoon off - so perhaps they could not get two weeks off for a summer jolly.

There were no Redruth players in the Cornwall team that played Herts. Not sure if any had played in the previous two games.

Have I missed something? Why all the fuss about an England Counties squad that doesn't include any Redruth or Taunton players?
There are many other clubs with no representatives.

Have to agree - one would expect the majority of the Counties side to come from Nat 1 - the sides mentioned didn't even finish in the top 3 of N2S.

Were the players available? There is no payment for playing for EC so unless you can take holiday from work or are in a position to lose 2 weeks wages it’s not always possible to take up the offer of a place on the tour regardless of the team you play for

Why is the EC pick in January and players are told play 1 game for your county and your in. Its bullsxxt it makes no decision what county you play for or how many times you have played its all about the clubs. Need to changed it to nat1 and 2 select and forget about the counties. Any players from the 3rd division of county rugby?

Wrongly informed. Squad isn't selected until after the 2nd round of county matches. Over 80 players are asked if they would be available as pretty tough just to phone up 10 days before departure and say can you take 2 wk's off work? Over 20 new caps in squad with 11 counties represented. Before idiots make post learn the facts and actually ask anyone who has played for Counties what it meant to them!!!!

You may not know but I did ask someone involved with EC and we knew the 3 players selected from our county well before the championship started so some idiots where told the wrong thing THEN? Funny how they all got in and selected

FT and a convincing win by the English Counties team over Romania A , by 40 points to 5. sad to see a country who were once quite strong at international level struggle at this level , but that is taking nothing away from an excellent Counties performance 👍

When Rugby was amateur, Romania was under the Ceaușescu regime.
As I understand it there were plenty of army and police positions for rugby players as the regime saw success supported national prestige.

These days it has returned to a real amateur game, and a lot of the best players headed for France - Romanian is a romance language, possibly the closest to Latin.

One of Hull RUFC players ,Steve Hihetah, who plays in NPL is at this moment playing for Romania 7's in a tournament in Croatia, he holds dual nationality ,his mother being Romanian. He has previously played for Romania A.
I refereed a number games there in the Ceausescu era ,the standard of rugby then was of a good standard, but as Camquin mentioned there were positions available for good players in the forces and in the police. The national team managed some notable victories over some of the present 6 nations countries.

He had a short spell at Doncaster Knights but couldn't really cut the mustard at the time - looking at recent video footage he has bulked up a touch which he definitely needed to do when with us. Good to see he has been doing a number for Hull RUFC though.

Worth mentioning that all 3 Aspirational Pathway National sides have completed this season undefeated U18s Counties - 2 wins over Ireland, U20s Counties  2 wins over Georgia and the Senior Counties with 3 out of 3 in Romania.

CQ - suggestions as to who?

18s v Ireland Clubs & Schools, pretty tough

20s v Georgia U20s, the same Georgia U20 Squad that beat Ireland a few days ago in the U20 RWC Cup and lost by one score to SA U20s and by 12 points to France U20s - quite an achievement

Think the Seniors in Romania is a decent shout also given their past reputation, admittedly not as strong as their were but still ranked 17th in the World so to take on their A Team and win given that Counties went with a squad from Level 3 to Level 5 players in it, is also IMHO an achievement

The end of season EC tour is always to a developing country/area. The players/ coaches also hold sessions in the local communities that they visit and I personally think it is great going there.
Beting a national teams A side is no mean feat.

I would love to see a full counties/amateur level 6 nations along with its U20 equivalent.
Though I know it would not do any favours to fixture congestion.
