The Vicar is popular because he has good game management and communication skills.  He also doesn't take himself too seriously and has a really good sense of humour - I know because I've gently questioned his decisions from the touchline and always had a witty riposte.  And if he makes a mistake?  Well there will either be forgiveness from above or Divine Retribution.

From the Stockport game on Saturday and Hopping Mad's comments.

I dont believe Stockport were aggreaved to have lost the game to a Preston team that performed well in the most part - the frustration comes from the complete lack of knowledge of the referee on how to control both the scrum, lineout and mauls.....for both sides he was appauling at the ruck.

Stockport did have a period of extreme dominance in the forwards and were penalised several times in the opponents 22 with bizare decisions.  yes hoppers went down the other end and scored a excellent try and probably deserved their win but the game was ruined by an embarrassing performance from the referee.  I believe he would be better suited to refereeing U10's rugby where it is more like rugby league - at least at this age range he will possibly know as much as the players about Rugby Union!

With regards to Sean Longs performance preston have a lot of work to do defensively as if stockport had of enjoyed some more possession he was completely out of position on a regular basis - something im sure will be worked on and improved rapidly.  other than that obviously a good player and will really help their attacking options!

I always enjoy seeing the referees who don't take themselves too seriously. As several people have pointed out in the thread Mr Vertigan stands out among them, but I'm sure he'd be the first to admit that the years are beginning to catch up with him. There's a few of the young lads who share his attitude and are all the better for it - John Meredith is a case in point, as well as a younger lad I saw at Redruth last year whose name escapes me.
