very interesting to see that Martin Fox (premiership referee) has been openly criticised in the press by the bigwigs at the RFU disciplinary dept, over his turning a blind eye to 2 players coming to blows.

this would probably have not been an issue had the fight not escalated, causing another player to come before the beak for a headbutt.

In times gone by, the Referee was the judge of fact in these matters, but not any longer.

This will increase the citings for minor foul play, and further undermine the Ref on the day.

It will be interesting to see how Referees adapt to this case, I would hope that they don`t adopt a zero tolerance approach to "handbags", the game is becoming sterile enough already, with Non-Contested scrums etc,

Of course, no one is advocating serious foul play, and there has always been an unwritten code of conduct which players/referees have generally stuck to, with several offences warranting "straight Reds", - head butt/cowards punch etc etc, but 2 players having a "dust up" is surely not one of them??

The RFU said it was "disappointed" with Mr Fox`s handling of the incident, I`m sure he feels the same about their lack of support!!

From what I read in the paper, it was Judge Blackett who was disappointed, not the RFU - a subtle difference. I read a profile on him after the England's New Zeleand fiasco and he is a fiercely independent chap. Not sure that as the RFU's disciplnary man, (a part time role - he's the Judge Advocate General (http://www.judiciary.gov.uk/about_judiciary/roles_types_jurisdiction/military_justice/index.htm) ) he should be bracketted in the "RFU said" line.

I'd also point out that the unprecedented public criticism of the ref and the match citing official were straight out of the 'spin doctors guide to distracting attention' from the equally unprecedented decision to

a. reduce the he charge from a 'head butt' (entry point 6 weeks) to 'dangerous play' (entry point 4 weeks) despite incontravertible evidence of deliberate head contact

b. abrogate the discilplinary panel's formal guidelines on tariff reductions for mitigating circumstances by reducing Haskell's sentence by more than the maximum permitted 50%
a Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother

Would suggest that you view the case on RFU.com under Disciplinary. There was a legal reason for the downgrade.
