Cannon - can I expect to see you at Fowlers Wells on Saturday mate? For the first time in my 15 years to date as DoR, I am attending the pre match lunch as the rest of our alickadoos are down in Cornwall for our 55th Anniversary, which I cannot make. Will be donning my blazer in honour of the occasion!

I will be there, but avoiding the lunch as the club has Oktoberfest in the evening and I want to still be standing, my Mum and Dad will be there. I know some of your boys are staying on for the Oktoberfest! It'll be good to catch up as I haven't seen you on the circuit for a number of years.

Is Mr Fisher making an appearance at his newly adopted club?

Mr Fisher will be with his new charges the Dukes (our 4th team) at Hammersmith & Fulham 4s - he has them well organised and unbeaten at present!

As ever I think this will be a very tight league, the last few seasons has seen not a lot apart for the top 2 and bottom 2 in LSE1S and I think it will probably be the same.

So take the bait Dickon, my top 4 are now:

Medway (instead of Cobham)
Havant
CS Rugby (instead of Thurrock - got that really wrong!!)
Chichester

And the bottom 4 are:
Gravesend
Maidstone
Thurrock (instead of Brighton)
Old Colfeians

Oh really Pistachio? I looked at the teams in L1N and thought only 1 or 2 could be paying players. You think it's more rife?

We played a team where one of our old boys was saying how he got paid north of 200 a start (however suspect he was trying to wind up his former team mates) . numerous other rumors that we hear on the grapevine. a lot from opposing commitees of course and everything is only alleged or rumored. but there are two leagues within London N1. Those with a playing budget and those without.

I would bet my middle ball at least 5-6 teams are paying in LN1

Who admits to paying and who keeps it hidden under the carpet are two different stories!

Also I assume some clubs may pay only a few players, actually I assume that is the case for the majority!

But there are historical examples of clubs who's constitution is to not pay players to have paid players in other ways, either by club sponsors or internal "job roles" such as cleaner or barman etc.. So we'll never know the truth with the new RFU rules next season, it'll be worse than ever!!

From hearsay I understand 11 of the clubs currently in L1S have paid at least one player (not coach) in previous seasons.

LCRFC are one of the 3 then Canon - we have never paid a player (we do pay our coaches and physios), and never will pay players while I am here (and this is my 15th season as DoR). Our players are not sponsored and we do not find them jobs, but we do only train once a week so the commitment is not as great as some. They have to pay £200 each per season. I was at pains to point this out to a Chob Committee Man last week who heard something different.

Yes you're one of the 3, as with you at Chobham all our player pay membership of £300 - no matter which team.

Our players are encouraged to get sponsorship, but this goes towards stash and socials, and all 4 senior teams are encouraged the same. Senior players earn stash by attendance at training, physio and matches, so a 4th XV player can get kit the same as an elite squad player. As a community club, we employ coaches full time on our YDO and academy programmes, as well as utilising (qualified) players to coach junior age groups, but they do not have these roles as player benefits - as we do have social team players coaching junior teams. We just prefer to hire from within.

For the record match day kit and stash is club held and not given to the player!

Our Head Coach is an ex junior player who was captain at St Mary's and Ealing before returning; one of our assistant coaches is an ex mini, junior and 1st XV player now working for the RFU; our S&C coach is an ex mini, junior and 1st XV player; our 1st XV managers son now plays professionally, yet every Saturday morning he's there early sorting the kit and equipment out still; our 2nd XV coach is an ex Army forwards coach whose son played mini and juniors and is in the elite squad now; so we may not be perfect but we do try to be as incestuous as possible!! I believe currently since the turn of the century we've maintained 60% ex mini and juniors at 1st XV.
