Half way through the Pool games and it's a dull morning in St Ouen so my thoughts on how the various Pools might turn out:

Pool One - is the tightest of the three pools with Cov currently leading the pack but having played two of their games at home. I think Cov, Yorkies & Donny will all progress to the quarter finals but I think Donny will win this weekend's derby and ultimately with two home games in the last three will win the pool and secure a home draw in the quarter finals.

Pool Two - Myopically I think the team I follow will win all their pool matches and ultimately secure first seed. Trailfinders will be targeting their first league match on the 22 Dec but should also win four games and secure best runner up position and a home quarter final. Scottish may not do enough to progress even if they win their away match at Mond and could miss out on the knock out stages.

Pool Three - Easily the strongest pool of all with three exceptional teams in Irish, Pirates & Blues. Irish currently lead the group but need to travel to away games at Blues & Pirates. I think Irish will lose both those matches but will win their home game against Hartpury and gain enough bonus points to still secure top place in the pool. The winner of the Blues/Pirates match will be crucial and the pool final result could easily be decided on tries scored.

Overall I go for the following seeding:

1. Jersey

2. Irish

3. Donny

4. Ealing

5. Blues

6. Yorkies

7. Pirates

8. Cov

I'm rarely right on these things!

Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.

All looks pretty sensible - but it is very close in several of those groups.
I agree that the Bedford v Pirates game will be the key in our group, providing we can do the job at Hartpury next week. I'm looking forward to Irish coming to The Mennaye, and it will be a cracker which we definitely have a chance of winning. Going to Goldington Road will be very tough as they seem to be playing well and ran LI very close at the weekend.
I'm actually getting quite excited about this competition, believe it or not!

May be a bit early for this, but potentially worth posting the regs for the KO stages, including the section that the standard 1 v 8, 2 v 7 etc method of pairing teams in the QF may be adjusted to ensure teams from the same pool don't meet again. See below

The knock-out stage:

4.8  The knock-out stage shall be divided into four quarter-final Matches, two semi-final Matches and a final Match.

4.9  The quarter-final Matches shall comprise of the top two Clubs from each pool and the two highest ranking third place Clubs across all the pools, in all cases as ranked in accordance with the principles set out in 4.7 above. The winning Club of each pool and the highest ranked second place Club across all pools will play at home as follows:

Quarter-final 1: Seed 1 vs. Seed 8
Quarter-final 2: Seed 2 vs. Seed 7
Quarter-final 3: Seed 3 vs. Seed 6
Quarter-final 4: Seed 4 vs. Seed 5

The Tournament Organiser will adjust the quarter-final draw above in order to ensure teams from the same pool do not play each other.

4.10  The semi-final Matches shall comprise the winners of each quarter-final who shall play each other as follows and the first Club listed in each of the semi-final matches shall be the Home Club:

Semi-final 1: Quarter-final 1 vs. Quarter-final 4
Semi-final 2: Quarter-final 2 vs. Quarter-final 3

If possible, the Tournament Organiser may adjust the semi-final draw above in order to ensure teams from the same pool do not play each other.

4.11  The winners of the two semi-final Matches will proceed to the cup final. The cup final will be played at a venue determined by the Tournament Organiser in accordance with Regulation 5.4.

So basically Islander, you can't meet a team from your group until the final, unless 3 teams from the same group make it to the semi-finals. In which case I guess that seedings will prevail as to who plays who.

This could cause a few headaches.

Out of interest, does your copy of the regulations include the split of gate receipts in the knockout stages. The version I have seen is too early.

The version on the web site still says:

Quote
In the knock-out stage, the Tournament Organiser will advise participating teams of the arrangements for distribution of gate receipts and other revenue prior to the commencement of the competition

I've underlined four words in my previous post - wording that appears to cover this...

This is the regulations which I have seen for this season:

Reg 12.4 states:
In the knock-out stage, the Tournament Organiser will advise participating teams of the arrangements for distribution of gate receipts and other revenue prior to the commencement of the competition.

So presumably the clubs must know by now.
