Many players who make the step up are amongst the best players in those leagues, and are often more than a match for many level 3 squad players. Whilst expecting them to suddenly be one of the stars of the club overnight might be too far a step, players from lower leagues routinely make sizeable contributions to the success of level 3 clubs year in, year out.

Some of the best traffic across the leagues is those making their way up, looking for new, tougher challenges and facing them head on, rather than those drifting downwards looking for a level to suit their commitments but with still half an eye on the recompense they once commanded.

What the new season will show is whether Coventry are selecting from the local cream, or doing a Manchester and grabbing at anything that moves. I'd expect it to be the former, under which scenario a mid-table finish is probably the most likely outcome. But irrespective of what's happening in the Midlands, let's be under no illusions that there are players in lower leagues more than capable of playing their part at this level, just as there are players at this level who would look at home in the Championship.

TOTH – You make a very good point on clubs being promoted into level 3 and no doubt Redruth has unique geographical factors associated with the local recruitment of players.

On the other hand the challenges for Coventry is that they are stepping down from level 2, lost all of their professional players and have only retained a very few of these players, presumably on a semi-professional basis. Secondly, Coventry don’t have the luxury of having built up a strong squad morale through a promotion winning squad, rather  than having to cobble together a team across this summer of levels 4,5 and 6 players. Coventry doing  a Manchester at level 3? Don’t think so, but given the squad assembled to date – a season I still believe of struggles on the horizon for Coventry, but time will tell.

Watch Out - The Scottish Phoenix Club is on the Up!!

So, will academy transfers make a difference - possibly - if they stay long enough to gel with the team but by the very nature of the beast they often don't.

2010/11 looks like being another fascinating season in ours, the best league in town!

Otley had the same issue last year - we had 2 players retained from 2009/10 at this point last season and a new squad, which was alot of Leeds Academy and young players.

The issue is not one of quality, which we had, it was in experience and that the side hadn't played together. Most of the team had not played on our pitch before the season started !

They worked hard and played well, but struggled away from home and sometimes struggled to close a game out, through not having played at level 3. We won 4/5 in the run in and stayed up, having learned through the season.

It will be hard for Cov with a new team and no rest bite until Christmas. They will find level 3 faster and with several different styles of play, not just 'Championship Catch and Drive rugby'. Most teams in N1 pass the ball down the backline, even in the first half !

Out of interest Tea Ticket did you watch much Championship rugby last season? I've not seen much level 3 rugby in recent years but find it very difficult to believe it's 'faster' than level 2.

Don't want to cause any trouble on here but seems a bit of a dig?

The main difference is that IMHO ball handling in the Championship in the threes is faster and crisper when it gets there...........

I would say, given that we all experienced the Championship in the form of Esher last season, that the speed and accuracy of Championship ball movement out of the ruck and through the backs is the main difference.

I have been misunderstood slightly.

I was talking about the level 4/5 players which Cov have brought in finding it faster than what they are used to. The Academy lads will find it more physical.

I agree, the Championship is slicker and faster (at it's fastest), but is more controlled. Kick for territory and force errors etc and is sometimes more about not making errors, rather than creative play.

HITR

Assuming Toby has not been eating pies all summer - I assume you think that the summer signings are so goo he might struggle to  make the starting line-up.  Which is a worry as I do not see how we would survive promotion.

I get my first chance to see what they are like on Saturday.  Hope Moseley send down a side to keep us honest.

When I saw him at the start of pre-season he'd definitely been in the gym!! I hope we are going to see him this year as he made ground over the gain line pretty much every time he got the ball, especially in the post february period. I thought he and Tom looked great. He's been the model to the youth team I coach as to how a nimble wily back with great awareness can make it in the First team. Will make the team for saturday an intereting read.

Without wishing to be seen as a pedant, Champ, Redruth is about 100 mile away from Taunton - or the same distance as London is from Bristol or Birmingham.
Either way, the term ''neighbour'' hardly seems applicable, you might as well class Otley and Stourbridge as neighbours using that criteria!Wink
Seems that many view the south west through the same eyes as national Government - as a one size fits all ''West Country'' region, despite Bristol being far closer to London than it is to the far west of the ''region''.
Regarding the rugby, I think 'Druth may struggle this season, though we'll always be competitive at home. Jockney's should be the standard bearers, think class (and cash) will out, and they must be favourites.
Be nice to see Macclesfield again - do they want there prop back now? LOL

Interesting read in Rugby Paper - good to see that the Redruth additions are all home grown - UK that is, possibly England even South West - some might say, the way it should be done  Clap

Champion – Well said.

Not long now for all players to really show how good they are. Here was me actually thinking this thread was predictions for 2010/11.

Lost Forward – If I may say a sensible view, since the Government Office for the South West is based in Bristol. Let’s not be having any more parochial views please. Wink

Champion, occasionally charming though your little interjections are, this is not "Champions personal forum" of which you're the sole arbiter.

You can always skip over the bits that don't interest you and concentrate on those which both stoke and/or stroke your particular G-spot.
