It’s looking more likely that proper rugby will not return until September. The RFU is still hopeful of getting Government approval for competitive rugby under amended laws in the early part of next year. those amended laws would remove scrums and mails but allow line-outs, tackles and rucks.

People were up in arms about this new temporary/expedient 'code' - as you outline H - when it was first floated in the summer, even though the alternative was nothing. Various OTT 'over my dead body' proclamations. But now it seems, after 2.5 months (since traditional season start date) of nothing, some people are softening, with the option remaining for the diehards that it won't be compulsory to play or watch the amended code.

We'll just do anything to get the game on. Even if it does mean some temporary heresies.

OK - let me throw this in - depends on the level we're talking about obviously but will players expect to be paid to play this "hybrid" version, whatever that may be?
I doubt many clubs will have the resources to make those payments and more so why would they want to do that for a meaningless chuck-about. Call me diehard if you like but I've seen or heard nothing that changes my original stance that we come back physically and financially fit next September.

Agree TB. Also small point that some seem to have missed. If, and its a big if the Championship does restart and with small crowds allowed how can you run a league with Promotion but no relegation? Does that create an issue?

Can’t see any issue here - there is no National 1 being played this year so there will be no one to promote.

are you talking about relegation from Prem to Champ? and/or about relegation from Champ to Nat1?

Not really. It would just simply work as the bottom league of the county leagues work. Top team goes up, rest of the league stays as it is barring the bottom team of the higher league dropping down.

Which means principles of promotion/relegation within the RFU Leagues no longer applies as a "constant" and therefore makes the possibility of ringfencing easier to apply.

Cannot see there being any relegation from Championship if season does happen. National One already 16 clubs/30 league matches-madness to increase to 32 matches and an odd number of clubs in league. Promotion will have to be possible to solve the Saracens 'problem'.

With no National 1 season there can be no promotion or relegation. But I see no reason not to have promotion and relegation between Premiership and Championship. However, promotion to the Premiership without relegation from it would leave the Championship short of teams. Which might mean the reorg, currently postponed until 22/23 season might have to happen for the 21/22 season and include the Championship.

Can see the two pool Championship come in faster than planned, still the 22 league matches (as current).
Just a 14+8 format. But, would seem weird if Division 1 remains a full National league. So another pool league 14+8;format? |

Talking of relegation, note no mention of the 'r-word' in this Leicester Mercury poll on which team will finish bottom of the 20/21 Prem:

Interesting as I'm sure I've read the RFU have said that they've had assurances (from DCMS) that Rugby will return a. when its safe to do so and b. with other grassroot sports, so as to prevent an exodus from one sport to the other.

The talk over the weekend was outdoor team sports could re-start from March 29th. Presumably, the key is whether the Championship is regarded as 'elite' or not? |
