The Magic Money Tree is getting one heck of a shake... and I'm one of many that are paying and want to see the details... Where does it stop? Football players even at Level 4 (League Two - before if goes into the Conference) are earning big bucks.  Newport County players are on a 'paltry' £1500 per week.  £78k annual may be paltry in football terms but hopefully they'll have put something aside for a rainy day.

Appreciate that rugby salaries are very very different , but all the same....

I thought that the limit announced was £2500 per month.

It doesn't matter if its 2500 a month UNLESS its the only form of income.

This sort of crisis always raises wider issues including why did one of life's more civilised games off the field ( difficult to class on field activities as civilised) allow itself to get sucked in to paying average club players to participate in a sport they used to pay to play?

Not sure that rugby can ever get back to clubs running a number of sides over a 30 game season.

I think if one or two posters re-read this thread from the beginning they would be very embarrassed.

Or at least I hope they would be.

The last four new topics on the Nat 1 board have all been relating to the very real downside of the Covid 19 situation and the way it impacts on the clubs in this league.

At this juncture a lot of the content can only be speculation, but at the same time the menu looks like a giant omelette, so inevitably there'll be cracked eggs. History is littered with hiccups on development curves whether it's fire safety, marine architecture or bridge design. It's a Darwinian thing - a sudden change in the cirucmstances and the less adaptable species take a big hit and the more adaptable ones evolve and get on with life. The worst possible outcome if you're a giant reptile on Impact Day. Not great if you were a baker on Pudding Lane, either.

I had a chat with my Year 7 nephew today and in History they were doing The Great Plague. Not by coincidence I would guess. Nationally, the biggest agents of positive social change in this country have been World Wars and The Black Death. My sporting history for the 1340s is a bit lacking, but in 1920, Plymouth and Devonport Albion merged to create today's club after there was no sport for as many  years as we're talking months. (Doubtless it's taking an enforced look at its finances - and not for the first time, either.)

I don't have crystal balls, so I can't see what's coming. (And I'll avoid tasteless jokes about the medical vulnerability of ageing blazer wearers.) But I don't imagine the government will treat a wounded RFU as it did RBS. On the other hand, look around you right now. Avoid using cash when you shop. Don't go to a dedicated office building, work from home. Don't expect a letter from the powers that be, check the website or social media. Get your food delivered. How much of this is going to be commonplace in a matter of weeks. And then the norm in a matter of months? If pollution levels drop suddenly, all sorts of options appear regarding low emission vehicles. Has there ever been a bigger incentive to sort out your cholesterol or blood sugar levels before you hit retirement age?

Priority for clubs and governing body will be finance, for sure. But after that there will be all sorts of tweaks to their respective business models. Saracens' (and Carnegie's) have been found wanting. I can't imagine that even Exeter's has remained watertight. The Prem are currently undecided on whether to pull stumps, hoping (against hope, I would suggest) for additional revenue.

Given the Prem's current semi-autonomous, anarcho-cartelist ethos, mightn't the RFU decide that it's actually more cost effective to invest at a lower level? I mean, if you can fill Twickenham for the Army/Navy game, maybe there's a way to duplicate that across the "community game"? (Preferably without the collateral rivers of p*ss and pavement pizza...)

PS. Having concentrated my browsing on the Nat 1 board of late, it's been a real pleasure to read this thread from start to finish in one hit. Everything from nods of approval, chortles, wide-eyed jaw drops and full-on screwed-up incomprehension; the whole lot spiced up with a few low blows and mordant sarcasm. Congratulations, guys!

Oh - apologies for the length of this. I didn't have time to make it shorter.
Come cheer up, my lads - 'tis to glory we steer!

Definitely a pattern here. The Scots, Welsh and Irish all voiding their seasons. Are the RFU going to follow suit with the other British nations?

The Corona'd Man

I'd packed my bags each time pre-flight
Zero hour 7 AM
And I'd been high over the Isle of Wight by ten
I miss the game so much I miss the craic
It's lonely out in St Ouens
On such a timeless life
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch downs brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I've been Corona'd man
Corona'd man burning out his fuse in St Ouen alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch downs brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I've been Corona'd man
Corona'd man burning out his fuse in St Ouen alone

St Ouen is a great place to raise your kids
But the wind blows cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise spuds if you're dead
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job seven days a week
I've been Corona'd man, Corona'd man
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch downs brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I've been Corona'd man
Corona'd man burning out his fuse in St Ouen alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
'Till touch downs brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I''ve been Corona'd man
Corona'd man burning out his fuse in St Ouen alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
And I think it's gonna be a long long time

Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.
