We have a chance to debate a wider issue....n'est pas?
London Welsh are now a premiership side....are they backed by the WRFU? What if L.Scottish get to the premiership, should the SRFU be interested? London Irish Wild Geese are racing up the leagues, will the Irish RFU be interested? A whole new band of players who week on week play against the foreign army.....
How about a Club England of young playeurs (Rhubarb) who are in the Premiership...could they survive? Should they be exempt of relegation?
What do you zinks?

Good point LB.

This type of setup isn't confined to rugby either, i believe the "Unicorns" play in cricket's limited over competitions and is made up of over 200 young players nominated by the ECB and then the coaches narrow it to a normal sized squad.

I think it's a great idea. Should they be exempt from relegation? No. But i would like to see an English Development Squad in the National Leagues.

Right, so now rather than ripping the best youngsters away from their parent clubs and sticking them at Academies, we now want to form a team from them so they can beat the clubs that raised them?

Er, no thanks.

their parent club where they get little or no game time or real rugby in real leagues is the argument then?

I don't see that there is an argument.

Their 'parent' club usually isn't the Prem club...

but if the "parent club" aren't utilising them, surely they may as well go get game time elsewhere? Or is this already sufficiently covered by being dual-registered?

I seem to remember that Francis Baron floated this a while back.....at the time it seemed like a good idea, but was never taken seriously....least of all by the Premiership Clubs......maybe such a Team England could be put together and play in the LV cup? This might be made up of some old heads (Tyndall & Shaw) and some of these 'dual registered' players. They would get pool games and if and or when knocked out....back to their clubs....gets rid of the relegation issue but still gives good exposure Eh?

Whilst this is an interesting idea what would the benefit be?

 Allo West of England
Surely, it's the exposure to European rugby! I realise that you're trapped in the  West Country...open your mind a bit, it's not all about Hell Fire Corner?
Cheers

Didn't mean to patronise....not sure how they would qualify although a previous post which mentioned the way that cricket does it....seemed to make some sense...what do you think?

Personally I don't think it has legs. Where would they play? Where would their fan base come from? It seems to me they would deflect support and resources away from clubs. The RFU already fails to give grassroots rugby adequate support.

You'll probably accuse me of not opening my mind but I believe a healthy, financially stable, vibrant grassroots game is more important.

Sounds a bit like the Welsh Regions idea, that hasn't worked to anyone's benefit, has it? Take the good players away from Clubs that have a massive history, put them together with their closest rivals and expect everyone to turn up on a Friday night to watch them play another cobbled together team.

Well stated H
RH eluded to something similar as did TopofzeHill in an earlier post....Probably we've had the best out of this thread...but it did a little to pass the time of a rest weekend, apart from Lyds & Dings of course....and got something more than 'our eight will eat your eight for breakfast' from the Rouge Roofers....
Cheers....a la prochaine....Les
