I'm probably one of many who regularly watches the Prem "highlights" package that being the only way I can get sight of the way that the game and players are developing. Unfortunately I have now concluded having watched week 1 that the programme is no longer "fit for purpose".

The Flatman/Durden - Smith double act, opening credits and post match comments take up far too much time with the majority of  games being restricted to the actual try(s) scored with little attempt made to provide knowledgeable viewers with the build up. All the games must be filmed and "pundits" and commentators paid so why not expand the programme and show more actual rugby?

Flatman is actually pretty good so why not ditch the verbal sparring and use him to analyse and comment in greater detail. In the same vein appoint people who talk sense rather than soundbites -I'm talking about you Mr Dallaglio.

Amongst the debate about both rugby and indeed the Prem's future consideration should be given to expanding knowledge of the game as played at the top club level. It would arguably be better to accept less money in return for a show of (say ) 90 mins which even then would result in about 70 mins max of playing time which is less than 10 mins per game.

I watch the odd live game but at c£50 a pop for a reasonable seat ( I'm far too old to stand) this becomes an expensive business.

Any thoughts Gents? I'm always impressed with comments on this forum.

Totally Agree.
I cannot see the purpose of commentators or pundits. I'm just not interested in anything they have to say. The most infuriating is when they talk over the ref who is explaining what his decision was for and they then guess and get it wrong, just shut up !
BBC are the worst with Athletics coverage. Talking heads in the studio and you can see events going on behind them but they stick with the talking, Arrrrg ! For athletics, if you have Eurosport its far more athletic content with no studio.
Rugby is a minority sport and always will be. The constant attempts to turn it into a mass appeal sport result in a skewed version. Play a different version by all means just don't call it rugby. There isn't a single commentator that has added to my knowledge or enjoyment of the game. I have eyes, I can see whats going on. Does anyone watch rugby who is clueless about the laws ? If the broadcasters did a version with crowd noises & ref audio but no commentary I'd sign up now.

Couldn't agree more. One long term pair have irritated my wife and I for years. Ref Mike would get my vote.
What if the Hokey Kokey really IS what it's all about?

Isn't that available for the Pro14 S4C broadcasts when you can use the red button to remove the gibberish that the commentators come out with?

I think the C5 programme is a decent summary. Presenters are often a matter of personal taste - personally I think 'Flats' is one of the best, while MDS annoys me. Yes, perhaps the amount of actual rugby coverage could be increased a little, but I still want interviews with coaches/players and a bit of analysis of key moments...

As someone else has pointed out, if you want the weekend's rugby distilled down to just action only, with none of the flim-flam, you can get 6 x 5-mins highlights packages on the Prem website - these are posted in the 24-48hrs after final whistles, and are then available whenever you want them.

Watched the C5 highlights tonight; one major disappointment was that the presenters appeared to swerve the biggest incident of the weekend - the red card for Leicester's Will Spencer against Wasps. They asked Elliott Daly about it in a post-match interview and he gave a typical player's diplomatic answer, when some harder-hitting opinion was called for IMHO...

Tries only allows non-rugby video editors to edit coverage rather than someone who actually understands the game
