Story in yesterday's Rugby Paper about the B&I Cup possibly becoming a third European competition to include sides from Russia, Georgia, Romania, Portugal, Italy and the like. Being pushed by Premiership Rugby, who are sick of too many one sided matches in the Amlin Cup and want ERC to have a third Euro comp in order to accomodate teams from developing nations.

Quotes Prem rugby ceo Mark McCafferty who says funding is obviously an issue but comp could be regionalised in the group stages. Sounds quite exciting if anything comes of it.

Isn't a regionalised group exactly what is already in place?

I can't see any finance being put in place to make this idea feasible - although I do agree the with the sentiments of it.

Clubs need help with flights and hotels, but it shouldn't be beyond the powers that be at the IRB if they're serious about developing the game. I'd imagine when McCafferty talks about regionalising he means having an eastern europe group or groups. Ditto Spain and Portugal... and would the French second division come into it with the Italian second tier teams? I imagine they would. So you could have North, South and Eastern regions? Needs a lot of thinking through, admitedly, but there's potential in it if the funding was right. You could end up with about 40 teams in it from all over Europe, then have a joined-up last 16, 8, 4 and final knockout stage.

Sorry guys but a couple of posts have mentioned funding  and history shows us the RFU have no desire to spend money below the Premiership so its a none starter

Not all of us, have you not seen the pillboxes on the disputed North Notts/South Yorks border?

If only Nottingham was in Wales it would be perfect.

I think it is a great idea that teams from Russia, Portugal, Spain, Georgia etc are being put forward for a European competition as they need to enter for the sport to grow in these and other leagues across Europe.

Having a third competition might be a bit much though and like said it will need some tinkering.

Yes its a great idea, but is going to get a bit expensive on a few of the away match's for the clubs finances, let alone for the supporters. And its already been said that our beloved RFU cannot even find a sponsor for the B&I as it stands at this moment in time Stern Smile

If the RFU would stump up the cash to finance it, it's a great idea. If not...dead in the water.

We'll SEA what happens. Think we've plunged to new DEPTHS with this thread but no point in making WAVES at this time. WEED all be better off to wait and SEA HORSE we could be in out of our DEPTH.
I really cannot FATHOM out whether it is a good idea or KNOT.
Could have a WHALE of a time but it all depends on the necessary finance being RAYzed.
Could it be from Russia with Love or will we have Georgia on our minds or some other PLAICE? Something very FISHY about this. We could be thrown a SPRAT to catch a MACKEREL or is it just a red HERRING?Travel is sure to cost a few SQUID.
I'll get mi coat.
Could we play the Final at the Stade de France and would we FILLET?

Firstly, I agree about the funding, history tells us there will not be enough. The B&I Cup could be a good idea if there was better funding/prize money/sponsorship/incentive to win it !

Secondly, the Premiership cartel want to banish the (smaller) European teams that can't compete with them to a separate competition? Sounds a bit arrogant, we don;t want to play against you because we think you're not good enough to be on the same pitch as us!

Seriously bad idea.
Just how much interest is this going to generate?
Not everyone can play in Europe. Keep the Heineken Cup for the top teams and scrap the rest and then have a National knockout Cup for the rest with the winner qualifying for the Heineken Cup the following season.

Perfect example of the premiership teams not giving a Banana about rugby or its development , if a team cannot bring enough supporters to make a big profit for the Club tell them to orange off and play with their own size minnows don,t waste our time.  !!!!
When will 99% of Rugby teams and supporters wise up and tell the premiership to go and play with themselves and let the rest of us develop a thriving and successful sport which will benefit all and not the greedy and extremely spoilt brats at the top

As mentioned in a previous thread, having been drawn to face Bucharest in successive years in the Amlin, I don't think you would find much enthusiasm for this idea in Leeds for one, whether it be on the part of players or speccies.
That's easy for you to say.
