How did European Cup Finals get awarded to Bilbao ?
If they want these places to have the "business" then make sure supporters don't get gouged for hotels. Stadium was half empty last night so tickets weren't a problem it was just the hotel cost which was exorbitant because I tried to book. Even had an ABNB booking confirmed and then the owner came back for more money when she found out what was happening this weekend.
Cardiff hotel prices are equally stupid for any rugby event weekend.

The wife and I usually go for the Golden Ticket package - an early-bird promotion which gets you in for both finals in prime seats which is released a year prior to the event (just booked for Newcastle 2019).  We didn't book for this year as we have a young daughter, didn't want to tempt fate by leaving her with someone in case she didn't take to being away from us (as it turned out she's fine, so we could've gone!).

I did take a look when the package was released last year and many of the flights were already sold-out, as were the accommodation options, what remained were extortionate.

It'll be interesting to see what the crowd is like for the main event tonight.  In previous years there were considerably less people there for the Challenge Cup, but apart from the first year of the new format the Champions Cup has pretty much had a full attendance.

100% Italy should have been awarded this year's event.  I'm all for bringing rugby to new and emerging markets, like Spain, but let's make sure all the countries actually competing in the competition get a slice of the action first.

The Bilbao committee must have laid on one helluva spread Wink

Agreed on your comment about Cardiff, absolute non-starter if you want to stay over unless you have very deep pockets.  Transport is a nightmare too.

Surely everywhere bumps their prices up on these types of weekend?

I remember not bothering with an Ireland Wales 6N game, as our usual Dublin hotel wanted 600 euros a night.

I read last nights attendance was around 32,000. That's not bad.

Not for a European Cup Final for Cardiff and Gloucester  teams in a 58000 capacity stadium.

Par for the course really:

2016/17 Final - 24,494 (Murrayfield)
2015/16 Final - 28,556 (Lyon)

Par for the course for the Spanish. They know a big event involving the British is happening in their town so they try to gouge as much money as they can out of us. They do it all the time in football.

Everywhere does it.
Try getting a room in the Twickenham Marriott on match day. £417 minimum.

Did you see the price on Wlesh hotel rooms when the Champions League final was in Cardiff.
Those Spanish and Italian fans could've got a room in the Swansea Marriott for over £2000 a night.

Fans are fighting back though.
For the football final in Kyiv there is a protest at how much hotels were charging and a fan asked via Facebook if any local could put him up for a night or two. Over 5000 locals answered only asking for a beer in return. The response was so overwhelming that prior to this there was 3 hotels with vacancies on the final date and now there are over 50 with so many people cancelling their reservations and staying with locals.
Well done to all the local Ukrainians !

A bit like the Kiwis on the Lions tour.

I was so pleased when I heard the story about the Ukrainians coming good for the travelling Liverpool fans. It doesn't matter what sport you follow, you just don't want to get ripped off and it's a great big "banana you" to all of those traditional accommodation options that thought they could rinse a little bit more out of a captive audience.

I've already booked tickets and accommodation for the Rugby Euros in Newcastle, probably paid a little over the odds for digs too, but it's only going to get more expensive so I'm glad it's all booked and paid for. It's those that wait until they know the finalists that are really going to get stung.

I went to both Lyon and Bilbao - if you go for a golden ticket not a prob getting accommodation at a reasonable cost but the real robbers are the airlines - big money immediately EasyJet flights from Bristol to Bilbao came out so I went from H row.

V tough though for team supporters who are left paying a lot for a quick in and out rip.

Prob with Bilbao not that many connections or indeed alternatives. AS FOR RUGBY both finals last weekend ok for those with knowledge but not really exciting enough to attract new supporters. IMHO backs need to be given more time and space or the game will stagnate .

We took the train to Lyon, much prefer the option of taking the Eurostar where possible. Met a lot of Quins fans who had an absolute nightmare getting over to France, one couple drove to Folkstone for the only remaining seats leaving around 5AM!

Not having been in the position before, do the teams reaching the finals not lay any package deals for supporters, travel and accommodation?

Hard to do without sufficient  notice between semi's & finals.

Judging from what I saw in our hotel the answer is yes - some trips are day trips costing in excess of £500! 5 nights in good hotels in Bilbao cost us c£600 so £300 pp pus £150 return for flight. Booked in MAY2017 THOUGH

Problem is that tickets held back for finalists whose supporters then have two weeks to sort accommodation and flights.

I thought Bilbao did  a good job but you can't control pricing as hotels/airlines are now extremely savvy and well informed about big events.

Have you seen the joke prices for RFU trips to the World Cup next year?£26k for 2 people if we just so happen to want to see the knockout phase. I can't believe they'll be over run with takers.

And don't start me on prices for the cricket world cup.....

I saw the packages being offered by England Rugby Travel for the World Cup. Luckily I was sitting down at the time!

It really boils down to this, if you want to go to the final then book it all in advance. If you wait to see who is playing, you'll pay the price. It's wrong that the prices for travel and accommodation go up so much when the date draws closer, but that's life - not much you can do is there?

Perhaps we'll see something similar to what the Ukrainians are doing for the Liverpool and Real Madrid fans...

With Japan hosting the tournament it was never going to be cheap - one of the most expensive places in the World.

I hope you didn't look at the prices they were charging for the Lions tour then!

(Though I did pay them, it was worth it!)
